The process employs a tank with a porous bottom plate, where the plenum below the porous plate supplies low pressure air uniformly across the plate. The rising air surrounds and suspends the finely divided powder particles, with the powder-air mixture resembling a fluid.
Products that are preheated above the melt temperature of the powder are dipped in the fluidized bed of coating material, where the thermal attraction melts the powder onto the parts and fuses into a continuous coating. After coating, the parts are cured in an oven. Both thermoplastic and thermosetting powder coatings can be applied by fluidized bed.
Fluidized powder can provide durable coatings to the entire part or can be applied just to a portion of the part. This is referred to as dip to line or selective coating. Fluidized Bed Powder Coating can provide coverage of minor imperfections in the base materials.
